Our School Family

St Aelred’s is situated in the Heworth area of York, at the end of Fifth Avenue, at the entrance to Derwenthorpe.  The school is a few minutes’ walk from St Aelred’s Church, which is also on Fifth Avenue.  St Aelred’s serves St Aelred’s parish and our local community – Catholic children, children of all faiths and of no faith, are all welcome.

St Aelred’s is a single-form entry primary school – in other words we have one class for each year group. We admit up to 30 children into our Reception class each year.

We have our own nursery, integrated into our Early Years provision, providing our youngest children with a high standard of care and teaching; supporting their readiness to progress to our Reception Class.

We provide wrap-around childcare at our breakfast and after-school club, for children from Reception upwards, led by our own staff, on site.

We are proud to be part of the Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust – an innovative and forward-thinking Trust embracing sustainability, technology, ambition, and the vibrant living-out of our Catholic faith; we benefit from collaborative working with the other schools in the partnership.

Our school accommodation has regularly been modernised and extended giving: good sized classrooms; our multi-use ‘Sunshine Room’; a hall with a stage; and a library.  We are blessed with spacious grounds and have a wide playground, playing field, MUGA (multi-use games area) and outdoor classroom.

Children leaving St Aelred’s to go on to high school, usually go on to the Catholic high school in York – All Saint’s RC School; or transfer to Archbishop Holgate’s School – a Church of England Academy, which is nearby.

Parents and carers are welcome in school whether that is, for example, to attend events; to volunteer to help with reading or visits; to share any concerns; to join in with collective worship; or to support a Friends of St Aelred’s fundraiser.

If you are a prospective parent and would like to visit the school, please get in touch with the school office to arrange this: we will be pleased to welcome you and show you our school in action.
